Workshop Overview

The workshop, held over a period of two weeks, covered three sessions from April 11 to April 25. Students had the opportunity to delve into the world of sustainable fashion and explore innovative methods of designing and creating garments using 3D software. This unique approach allowed participants to combine creativity with technical skills, producing stunning visuals and prototypes.

  • Key learning objectives: Introduction to sustainable fashion initiatives, practice with simple sustainable design, utilization of 3D software to design and visualize garments.
  • Presentation by the clinical assistant professor, Chiara Vincenzi, covered various aspects of the industry, including green technology and sustainable manufacturing practices.

A Close Look at CLO3D Software

CLO3D, an online 3D software designed to streamline the garment design process, played a crucial role in the workshop. This cutting-edge tool enabled students to bring their designs to life in 3D, creating photorealistic images. Students gained hands-on experience with the software, developing essential skills that will benefit them in their future careers.

Key Features of CLO3D Description
Visual Design This feature enables users to create garments using the 3D avatar feature, allowing for realistic prototyping.
Avatar Technology Enables users to design and create garments around a virtual avatar, allowing for greater customization and flexibility.
Sustainable Design Tools Made available for incorporation into the design process, enabling students to integrate eco-friendly materials and sustainable manufacturing practices.

Fashion Design Leadership Opportunities

The workshop offered not only technical training but also opportunities for students to participate in leadership. Jadie Geleerd, a senior in the Fashion Arts and Apparel (FAA) program, led the sessions with the support of Clinical Assistant Professor Chiara Vincenzi.

This was a fantastic experience. I got to share my passion for sustainable fashion, especially with those who might not know anything about it, by providing resources and information for students to make more sustainable decisions in their careers as designers.

—Jadie Geleerd

Jadie Geleerd, a senior in FAA, was instrumental in the success of the workshop. She developed a zero-waste pattern for her sustainable fashion course last semester and thought her experience would be invaluable in leading the sessions.

  • Leadership opportunities: students had the chance to learn leadership skills from Jadie Geleerd and gain practical experience.
  • Promoting sustainability: Jadie Geleerd’s passion for sustainable fashion inspired the students and helped foster an environmentally conscious mindset.

Conclusion

The School of Art & Design Re-Fashioned Fashion Show, hosted by the Student Sustainability Committee, will take place on May 10 at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will showcase their sustainable fashion creations, solidifying the workshop’s impact. The grant from the Student Sustainability Committee funded the workshop, marking a significant step towards inspiring students to live sustainably. With Jadie Geleerd at the helm, this project demonstrates the potential of fashion education to make a positive difference in the world. Jadie Geleerd highlighted the significance of educating people about sustainable fashion, stating, “Educating people about sustainable fashion and what the options are is really important. The fashion industry is terrible, to be honest. They have a lot of programs and policies in place, but one, a lot of companies and stuff don’t actually follow them, or they have a lot of goals that they don’t reach. So I think just educating people about sustainable fashion and what the options are is really important.” By supporting initiatives like this, we can foster a more sustainable future for our industry and our planet.

The Sustainable Fashion Summit, hosted by Jadie Geleerd, is another initiative aiming to address the environmental impact of the fashion industry. Geleerd is committed to promoting sustainable fashion practices and inspiring others to join the cause. At the end of the workshop, students successfully created their designs using CLO3D software and went on to print and make their garments in the Siebel Center for Design shop. This culmination of skills showcased the students’ creativity, technical expertise, and capacity for innovation. With the support of the Student Sustainability Committee, the Re-Fashioned Fashion Show will highlight the impact of sustainable fashion on a larger scale. The event will celebrate not only the students’ creativity but also the potential of fashion education to drive positive change. It’s a step in the right direction. The event will undoubtedly serve as a beacon for sustainable fashion, inspiring others to adopt environmentally conscious practices in the industry. As we move forward, we will continue to explore ways to make a positive impact on the planet. By exploring new technologies and approaches, such as 3D software and sustainable design, fashion education can drive innovation and foster a more sustainable future for our industry and our planet. The workshop’s success serves as a testament to the power of collaborative efforts and demonstrates the potential for fashion education to make a lasting impact.
